Art Discussion 1

Only for Primary 4, 5 and 6 pupils. Hi Everyone! Attached is an artwork created by a pupil from White Sands Primary School.

In this week's segment of Art Discussion 1, I would like you to take a good look at the Art Work, making use of all your possible senses and respond to the guiding questions which are posted below. There are no right or worng answers so feel free to respond. It would be good if you could give me a paragraph or more of what you see and feel about the art work. I will provide you with my response to the art work at the end of the week.

Enjoy the Art Work!

What do you see in this art work? What colours has the artist used? What do call such colours? Why do you think that he/she used such colours? What is he/she trying to tell you? What do feel when you look at the art work? Why? Describe your feelings. What medium do you think he/she has used to create the art work? If you were given an opportunity to provide a title for this work, what would you name it? If you were allowed a chance to create your own art work with the same title, what medium would you like to use and why?

Now that you have had a chance to study the art work and read the questions, do let me have your postings.

Mr Fernando's Comments: Sunday, 20th July 2008

I would like to thank the teachers as well as pupils who took time to look at the Art Work posted and talk about it.

The Art Work was created by Nigel Lee Jia Wei of Primary 6 Excellent of White Sands Primary School. He worked on the Theme entitled 'Fire Prevention'. Yes, The words 'Fire Prevention' is not clearly seen. I guess that it is the way Nigel wants it to look like in his work. When there is a fire, things become very hazy due to the emission of smoke. There are several warm colours such as reds, oranges and yellows in the work which depict danger and heat caused by the flames. The cool colours such as the greens and blues do not occupy large areas of the piece showing that fire spreads fast and wild. I agree that we should never misuse fire as it could cause much destruction. Nigel has made use of the colours well. Looking at the art work, one feels scared and it may cause one's pressure to go up, realizing that fire is a good friend but very dangerous enemy. Nigel used a lot of poster colour in his work and if you had a chance to see the real work itself , you would be able to see the texture caused by the heavy use of paint. The art work comes alive. The various titles suggested by many of you are very suitable. Yes, I wouldn't place the art work at home; not because it is not a good piece but because Nigel has an intention. He wants us to spread the message of the dangers of fire. Thus, we should display his work in prominent public spaces such as schools, kitchens and places where flames are exposed. Thank you Nigel.

We see fire in the art work. We also see the word 'Fire'. The artist used blues, yellows, oranges, black, reds and white. The reds, oranges and yellows are warm colours and they give us the feeling of heat. Fire produces heat. The blues and greens are cool colours. They represent water. The artist is trying to convey the message that fire is dangerous and that we must stay away from it. Looking at the art work we realize that Fire is harmful. We think that the artist used poster paints to create the art piece. We would either name the art work 'Fire is dangerous' or 'Don't play with Fire1!. Many of us would like to use watercolour pencils as we may use it dry or even add water to the colours to give the artwork a watercolour effect.

In this art work, I see the words "Fire Prevention" and some flames in a blue, yellow and green background. I find the combination interesting as the blue background has hints of green due to the mixture of yellow used. The artist has used colours such as blue, yellow, green, red, orange and black. Such colours are called warm and cool colours. Warm colours found here are red, orange and yellow. The cool colours found in this art work are black, blue and green. Perhaps the artist is trying to tell us to keep away from fires and do not play with them unnecessarily because the misuse of fire may be dangerous. Thus, I think the artist is trying to convey the message of fire prevention. We should not misuse fire as it can lead to destruction of property, people being hurt and in worse case scenarios precious human lives may be lost. I think the artist has used poster paint and watercolour pencils. If I was given the opportunity to name this art work I would name it "Fiery Fiend" or "Beware of the Flames". If I was allowed to create my own art work with the same title, I would use meduims such as poster paint, oil pastels and watercolour pencils. I would choose to use such mediums as I want a variety of mediums so that the art work will stand out and look different from the others. Also i think it will be interesting because different textures are created when different mediums are used. The art work may also look more beautiful with the different effects created by the different mediums.

We see an angry, but organized fire. there is a fire that is reflected by water. We could see the word, "fire prevention" in the picture.
The colours are: red, orange, blue, black, yellow, green and white. The colours are friendly, lively and hot and warm. The artist wants to contrast the colours used, express the feelings, bring out the friendliness in the artist.
Fire is a good servant but a bad master. The class feels angry and irritated because it is hard to decipher the words. The artist had used oil pastels and paint to create the artwork.
We will use " Fire is a good servant but a bad master " as the title for this artwork. The medium which we would like to use to portray our artwork would be oil pastels and canvas.

We think that the artist had used paint on a poster to create this piece of work. We would think that the title could be the phrase, "Fire is a good servant, but a bad master."
Our class have decided to use oil pastels on canvas so as to be able to blend the colours easily.

The art work is about Fire Prevention. The reds and oranges represent the danger of fire. The fire is surrounded by water to prevent it from spreading. The water may be used to extinguish the fire. The artist wants to convey the message that if one plays with fire, he or she could get burnt. The art work makes one feel scared of the dangers of fire. The art work is lively because of the use of bright colours. A number of pupils felt that they would not want to hang such an art work at home because of the fear that a real fire might wipe away their fortune. Pupils felt that such an artwork would be well placed in a school or other public places to warn people of the dangers of fire. Mixed media could be used to create another piece of art work dealing with the same topic as it could provide special effects and give the art work greater texture.

The artwork is warm from the colours used such as red, orange and yellow. Blue could have been added as the background in constrast with the warm colours. Maybe a black background may enhance the picture as black also represents smoke or soot after fire.

WE felt that the artist did not convey the message effectively as the words were not clear. The word 'Prevention' was truncated or broken up making it difficult to read it. Letters were mixed with the fire making it hard to read at first glance.

Some of us were not in favour of having it placed at home because the colours are too 'messy'. If it were to be in a home, an appropriate place will be the kitchen.

Hi, once again i am here. Talking about the art work, i would like to give this art work a title: Beware of the 'monster' FIRE! As the artist have used reds and oranges-the HOT colour, to warn viewers of fire's danger. As for the blues and yellows, it may be saying that we should use water to splash at the fire, if there is any, to prevent it from spreading to other places. But most importantly, the artist wants to convey the message that lives may be lost if we play with fire. Thus, we should not misuse or even touch it. The colour of the art work may be done with poster paint. If it could be done with mixed medium, it could be more lively and would attract more attention of the people, if we hang it in public.

Hello,Mr Fernando.Hope you are well.
This art piece is special because it talks about the dangers of fire. I can see the words 'Fire'. I like your combination of these yellows, orange, reds. I also believe that the Blues are the water and it will take back at the fire.I would personally put it at fire station where they can be reminded of their duty. All in all,This is a great piece.Great Work!:)
